“Construction should be decorated. Decoration should never be
purposely constructed.”
This table is construction decorated.
Therefore the construction of the table is first priority in the design of this table.
For example the base, because of the large square shaped anchor points. the table
looks strong and stable. Also the decoration for the base has similar characteristics of
a bridge like the arch. Thus making the decorations have purpose.
What did Jones mean?
To me Jones message was...
That most craft men were paid by the ruler but then came the industrialization which created the middle class which then allow more people to buy more of the craftsmen' work. Because craftsmen can now recreate their work, allowing his product to be brought by the generally public. But still most of the craftsmen products were still aim to be used by the ruler which didn't need to be completely useful.
So I think that Jones was trying to say is that craftsmen/designers should be looking to change their old habits and think about the newly created general public.
I agree which Jones's idea.
I believe by having better function which in products there should be more efficient workers and a higher standard of living because of less fiscal and risky work towards the worker.
I also believe that decoration constructed still has a place in design but just not for the universal design.
